"The Misadventures of a Single Mom"

 The Snake Debacle!
Back to Full Blog

Wanted to share the "highlight" of my week with you guys.

Yesterday after school the kids were playing outside. After a short while the youngest comes running into the house screaming like a freakin banshee! I cannot understand much of his fear induced verbiage but I do make out one word very clearly....SNAKE.

I'm thinking that he must be wrong. This kid is afraid of his own shadow, ants, ladybugs, cactus...you get the idea.

I run out onto the deck and look out into the yard. The dog is running around like he's on fire and he is chasing...low and behold a rather large brownish snake. The snake is "running" for its life and makes a dash under the deck. DAMN!

After finally convincing the dog to return indoors I did what any Mom would do after her mild meltdown...I called Animal Control. Seemed logical at the time. That's the kind of stuff they do right? Help freaked out Mom's like me with snake issues. One would think.

After explaining to the nice young man at animal control about my "situation" the conversation proceeded as follows:

Animal Guy: Can you see the snake now ma'am?

AM: No, I'm inside talking to you.

AG: Okay ma'am I need you to go outside and tell me if you can see the snake.

I want to scream, "ARE YOU HIGH?" yet I refrain for the sake of the children. I carefully creep outside via the garage look over at the deck area and quickly declare, "Nope can't see him"

AG: “When you look under the deck do you see anything?"

Now I am convinced that this guy is hitting the crack pipe. Does he really honestly think I will get down anywhere near the deck for a gander?? Man, I know I can be stupid sometimes, but PPPPLLLLease...I don't not have the word "Super Dumb Ass" flashing on my forehead. At least not today.

Animal guy continues to inform me that unless I can actually see the snake they won't come out to the house. He proceeds to tell me that I can either wait until I see it again and call back or I can call an independent snake specialist. WHAT?

I am flabbergasted!! I thought that's the kind of stuff they did. Apparently they can only "control" the animals they see. Great. What am I supposed to do when I see the snake tell him to sit?? So of course I opt for the latter choice he so wonderfully offered up to me. I cannot let the kids or the dog play outside with a big old snake roaming the grounds. And believe me for the sake of my sanity they HAVE to play outside!

So animal guy gives me snake guys phone number. I call snake man....and what should be a simple experience turns into one of the most colorful moments of the year.

Tune in tomorrow for the adventures of me and Snake Man. I promise it will be worth your while. Until then....take care out there.

Ohh, I so understand your dilemma. I recomend a .22 or a shot gun. *hehe* But I know guns aren't for everyone... I've had to deal with TWO rattle snakes in my yard this month. With 5 dogs and a single trip to the vet for anti-venom running at the low starting price of $900.00 (and this assumes they are bit between 9 and 5, M-F) I can't let them coexist inside the fence line. I'd never killed anything before in my life--so it was a very interesting experience. I don't much care for it. My friend suggested that I get a long pole with a hook on the end, and carefully wrap the poisonous snake on the hook of a 12 foot pole and then put it in a garbage can for safe release far outside of my yard. The thing is...it was hard enough for me to get 12 feet away from it to shoot it with the .22. I am NOT going to play with the live rattle snake and then drive down to the river with it IN MY CAR. Nope. Can't happen. heehee So I made them a deal...Stay outside my fence and away from my loved ones, and I won't have to shoot you. I hope they understand. =P Good luck--can't wait to hear the outcome.

A friend of mine had a similar incident last month when he was sitting on his patio. As he was having his morning coffee, a snake crawled up onto the deck to wish him a good morning. Unfortunately, it happened to be a coral snake. He had to kill it, since the coral snake is highly venomous.

Anyway, I know that you are frustrated with Animal Control. Unfortunately, their policy is to come out if the animal is still there and will not leave. There have been times at work when we have had to call Animal Control to report a stray dog or dogs roaming the park. Another time, we had to call AC to remove a alligator snapper turtle from a storm drain. Damn thing was over three foot long! And he had an attitude to go with his size.

Animal control workers are having problems here in Florida with exotic lizards that were once pets. Then when the creatures get too big and hard to take care off, people release them into the wild. Among these are pythons and boas, monitor lizards, and iguanas.

As for your snake, chances are that it was non venomous, and probably was as scared as your children were. That is why it most likely went under the deck. My advice is to make sure that the dog is with the children whenever they are outside.

A friend of mine had a large piece of property here in Central Florida, and when his two children were little, he bought a Jack Russell terrier. Whenever the children went outside to play in the yard, the dog went outside too. That dog caught and killed more of its' share of snakes.

And in case you're wondering, my friend has the coral snake preserved in a jar. Something for his granddaughters to take in for show and tell.

Red and yellow, kill a fellow....

AM,

I did not think of it at the time, but the next time you call animal control and they say that they cannot come out, ask them if they have someone under contract that deals with the animals/reptiles that are considered too dangerous. In Florida, several agencies have someone under contract to take care of the calls involving alligators.

Also call the Fish and Wildlife Commission for your state. They will most likely have someone in your area that can handle calls involving reptiles.
